General description of the collection: The William H. Puntenney papers consist of a memoir titled: For the duration: An autobiography of the years of military service of a citizen soldier during WWII, June 6, 1941-December 21,1945. This memoir describes in detail through narrative and anecdotes cavalry horse units and training, wartime United States housing shortages. He describes air travel to England, training once there, and planning for the D-Day invasion. He chronicles his combat duties from Normandy to the Elbe and VE Day, as well as his occupation duties in Munchen-Gladbach, Bremen and Bremerhaven. He also comments on displaced persons, Allied prisoners of war, German Army camoflage techniques, V-1 bombs, the capture of the German V-2 Division, and meeting the Russian soldiers at the Elbe.

Lieutenant Colonel (LTC) William H. Puntenney graduated from the University of Arizona in May 1941 having completed four years in the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) and been commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant. He was assigned to the 1st Cavalry Division, 7th Cavalry Regiment, Special Weapons Troop at Fort Bliss, TX, where he participated in the Louisiana Maneuvers and the Fort Riley Motor Course.
